Farm info

João Luiz Manzoli is from an Italian family and was born and raised in family agriculture. His grandfather, Pedro Manzoli, cultivated corn, and beans and produced milk on his farm in the region of Vargem Alta. His father, Narciso Manzoli, grew up with his family and the farm during a time when coffee production was minimal. Mr. Narciso married Maria Ana in 1950 and purchased a small plot in Taquarussu. He also continued to work on his father’s farm to help maintain the family.

Mr. Narciso left his land to his wife and sons, and João Luiz came back to the farm in 1978, when he began to plant coffee, working hard to cultivate the first hectare. In 1990, João Luiz married Angela Scaffa Abreu and together they continued in coffee agriculture with everything João Luiz had learned in his youth.

After about four years producing coffee, João Luiz became interested in depulping his coffee to add value to the product. He acquired his own depulper and was motivated by his neighbors and friends to create quality coffees.

For the best quality, the couple had to put forth their best work and effort, including selective harvesting and facing difficulty with finding manual labor. In 2018, they were able to see the results of their hard work, which motivates them to continue to produce quality coffees. Five of the farm’s eight hectares are planted with coffee that flowers from October to December for the harvest from June to September.

Region

Montanhas do Espirito Santo

The Montanhas do Espirito Santo region is dominated by small-scale coffee-growers and is characterized by the presence of farmers who are actively engaged in the entire chain of the production process. Growers in Espirito Santo work with family members and build off of traditional knowledge to innovate and improve their quality of life and coffee. Located in the southern area of the Espirito Santo state, where mild temperatures (73ºF) and steep highlands (between 700 and 1,000 meters) favor growing Arabica coffees, this region produces a superb quality coffee with a round body, nice acidity, and fine sweetness. While the most common process for the region is Natural, Pulped Naturals are increasing in popularity.
